About the position

We are seeking one (1) Senior Fisheries Technician to assist with activities associated with research, monitoring, and evaluation of endangered Snake River Sockeye Salmon.  This position will be responsible for supervising seasonal Fisheries Technicians on the successful completion of tasks. Field activities will include trapping, PIT-tagging, and collecting biological information from adult and juvenile Sockeye Salmon, interviewing anglers to obtain harvest information, and participating in trawl and snorkel surveys on several bodies of water in central Idaho.  The official duty station is the Eagle Fish Hatchery, but most field activities will occur in the Sawtooth Basin near Stanley, Idaho.  Housing, food, and transportation will be provided while in the field (dormitory and camp groceries).  Duties may also include assisting at the Eagle Fish Hatchery with typical hatchery duties (fish culture, data entry, and equipment maintenance). 

General Information
This position, with the direction of the Research Fisheries Biologist, will work as a team leader and have field supervisory responsibilities for 2 Fisheries Technicians. Incumbent will participate in hiring workers to collect fish data, develop work schedules, train workers in data collection and fish marking techniques, provide input for purchasing equipment, and insuring safety of workers while using equipment.
Qualifications
The applicant must possess a valid driver’s license. Strong preference will be given to individuals who have at least a BS from an accredited fisheries program or closely related field with some experience supervising others and the ability to operate will little direct supervision.
Responsibilities
Incumbents will be required to travel to remote locations (including overnight stay – up to 3 or 4 nights) for fish tagging, trapping, or sampling.  These positions may involve walking over rugged terrain and along stream banks, standing and working in cold water and lifting/carrying equipment up to 60 lbs. for short distances with or without reasonable accommodations.           

Primary tasks include entering and processing fisheries data into appropriate databases (primarily PITAGIS), summarizing data, preparing preliminary analyses and reports, and reviewing data summaries to ensure accuracy.

This position requires the use and maintenance of power boats for collection of fish and biological data; operating and maintains fish tagging and marking equipment; operating, maintaining and repairing fish traps; inspects equipment to ensure proper working order, and diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems.
