Trapping education class materials

Trapper Ed Certification

Trapper education is required for those who have not held an Idaho trapping license prior to July 2011. Trappers who show proof of having held a trapping license from Idaho prior to 2011 are exempt.

Anyone who intends to trap wolves must attend both trapper ed and a separate wolf trapper education course prior to purchasing wolf trapping tags. 

These courses are in-person and cover trapping laws, ethical trapping, avoiding non-target catch, safety and basic trapping methods. Wolf trapper education covers wolf trapping regulations, ethics and trapping methods.

  • Taught by certified wolf trapper instructors in a classroom setting.
  • Interactive training
  • Curriculum includes wolf management, wolf trapping regulations and ethics, wolf habits and behavior, rigging and setting traps and snares, avoiding non-target captures, proper pelt care, and reporting requirements.
  • Length of time: 6 hours

All wolf trappers in Idaho are required to attend and pass a wolf trapper education course prior to trapping wolves. Idaho Fish and Game has recently posted wolf trapper classes in all 7 regions of Idaho. These classes will be taught during January through July 2024.

Trapping is an age-old tradition, especially in the West. Today, that tradition continues as regulated trapping plays an important role in wildlife management.

Today’s trapper has to attend an 8-hour trapper education class before being allowed to purchase a trapper license, unless the trapper has a documented history of trapping prior to 2011.

To legally trap wolves in Idaho a trapper must have successfully completed BOTH the trapper education and wolf trapper education classes. The classes do not have to be taken in
